Open labs at Campus Party
There are many modern and high tech laboratories in Tallinn University of Technology that are generally open only for study and research, but on the occasion of the 100th anniversary, everyone has the opportunity to visit the laboratories and to find out more from the researchers about the use and cooperation possibilities.
On September 14, the labs are open to visitors from 2-6 PM.

ISEAUTO (Self-driving Vehicles and Autonomous Systems Lab-CC) - room U05-108, entrance from outside
The lab work is focused on the development of self-driving vehicles and mobile robots. Artificial intelligence software, robot electronics as well as mechanical solutions for autonomous systems are developed in the laboratory. You can see Estonia's first self-driving car and various mobile robots.
Heating Lab "Utilitas" - room MEK-009
This lab is like a micro world of thermal energy displaying a miniature district heating system. Here you can get an overview of the nature of modern production, distribution and consumption of heat and power. An instructive and entertaining way to discover this fascinating and otherwise invisible world. In the lab, it is also possible to analyse the performance of the Tallinn district heating network in real time and the consumption of heat of the Mektory building. The unique fuel lab "Utilitas" is located in TTÜ Mektory. Come to the heat trip to the heating lab!
Flexible Manufacturing Systems and Robotics Demo Centre - room U05B-208
You can have a guided tour in the Demo Center for Flexible Manufacturing Systems and Robotics at 2:15 PM and 5:30 PM. There will be a demonstration how the flexible manufacturing system works according to industry 4.0, how to control an industrial robot by virtual reality, and how to create 3D images of real objects.
Protolab - room U05B-103
The protolab has a 3D metal printer unique in Estonia, which can print relatively large models and details from different metals, such as stainless steel, titanium or aluminum. The device makes it possible to manufacture more sophisticated products than by conventional technology. You can see a variety of 3D printers and products made by them. You can ask questions and discuss the trends in production technology.
High Voltage Laboratory - Room NRG-104
High voltage tests are carried out in the laboratory to introduce the two main test equipment of the high voltage laboratory and demonstrate visible electrical solutions, or "mini-thunder". We’ll show how lightning strikes an electricity pylon and what happens when the voltage in the power line goes up too high. We also remind you the basics of electrical safety.
Virtual Reality Laboratory - room MEK-035
Virtual and augmented reality is one of the fastest growing and challenging IT areas. The Virtual Reality Lab of TTÜ Department of Computer Systems located in Mektory creates opportunities for cooperation between the human and artificial world. There are tens if not hundreds of potential areas of application. Already now, using the virtual reality applications created by researchers and students of TTÜ School of IT, without stepping outside you can walk in one of the residential districts of Tallinn, feel as a chosen person by visiting a small planet when traveling from one planet to another in space. You can take a tour in the virtual Mektory building – see if and how the virtual world differs from reality.
Electrical Machines Research Laboratory - room NRG-001
TTÜ Electrical Machine Group is engaged in the calculation, modeling, management, testing and development of electrical machinery (motors, generators, transformers). In the Electrical Machines Research Laboratory, we show the electrical machinery we design, including 3D printed electrical machines (this is a relatively new technology that allows without tools the production of components or whole devices directly from a CAD file). We present our ongoing projects aimed at developing a new design methodology for electric motors, which takes into account all the costs of the entire life cycle of electrical machines and motors (production, use, utilisation). The electrical machines lab carries out various electrical machinery tests with up to 50 kW machines.
TTÜ100 Satellite (Mektory Space Center) - room MEK-203
The main task of the Space Center is to centralise cosmic activities of universities and organise practical courses and workshops. The Space Center also displays the maquette of TTÜ100 Satellite to be sent to space next year.
Food Laboratory - room SCI 1st floor
TTÜ is the oldest provider of higher education in food technology in Estonia. Come to visit our research labs SCI-150 and others. See the texture profile analyser to determine the texture of food, compare the microflora of eco and conventional sunflower seeds, learn the odor molecules found in food, and microscope the starch, honey or sugar crystals.
Tribology and Materials Testing Laboratory - room U06-206-209), entrance from the room U06-209
The Tribology Laboratory of the TTÜ School of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering is the only place in Estonia where materials can be tested under tribological conditions in actual working places. The wear of the machine parts (loss of material or change in shape) cannot be ruled out if the loaded parts move relatively to one another). Therefore, all appliances or their parts are damaged due to wear or corrosion. The conditions for testing include slip (with or without lubrication at room or high temperatures), abrasive (different loads, speeds, abrasive, etc.), erosion wear (dry or wet, different abrasive concentration, room temperature or high temperatures, etc.), scapular tests and combined processes (for example, tribocorrosion or impact abrasive wear).
Everyone interested in the library can visit it independently during the day, guided tours are also offered. A guide starts at 2 PM, 2 PM, 4 PM and 5 PM from the library's information desk. On September 14, the library is open from 8:30 AM to 6 PM.
Biorobotics Center - room ICT111
At the Biorobotics Center, a guided tour at every full hour takes you to see our grooviest inventions such as the robotic turtle and robotic fish, and gives an overview of the activities and future plans of bioroboticists. It is possible to see and chat with real scholars, and in good luck, even with a real professor. The last tour starts at 5 PM.
Electronics Study Laboratories - Room U02-205
In the Electronics Laboratory you can see layouts, measuring devices, and tasks that students use to solve basic and more complex electronics problems. Guests can get acquainted with the laboratory, as well as have hands on some maquettes.
Communications Technology Study Laboratory - room U02-209
In the Communications Technologies Study Laboratory you can see:
- the temporal shape and spectrum of electrical signals generated by the voice to an analogue telephone;
- the bit line bit data transfer in a phone line and related electrical signals and spectra;
- data transfer between computers without using wires and an overview of Wi-Fi networks in the room.
