Happy anniversary, Finland!
Today, on December 6, the Republic of Finland celebrates its 100th anniversary and Tallinn University of Technology has raised the Finnish flag to mark this unique event.
Tallinn Tech is the most international university and the biggest international community in Estonia - more than 1 400 international students from over 90 countries. Finland is represented the most - 409 Finnish students attend Tallinn Tech at the moment. 389 of them study in Bachelor's, 18 Master's, and 2 PhD programme. The most popular faculty among Finnish students is the School of Economics with 400 students, followed by the School of Information Technologies with 5 and the School of Engineering with 4 students.
According to Lassi Juhani Päivärinta, Professor of TTÜ Department of Cybernetics, it is internationalism, not the nationalism, that has lead Finland to its undeniable success in the last hundred years. "Estonia should also take the same steps. Finland and Estonia will always be friends, but I am happy when I here young Estonians speak better English that Finnish. We need more foreign language lectures and seminars in the universities and outside," adds professor Päivärinta.
Ahti-Veikko Pietarinen, Professor of Philosophy in Ragnar Nurkse Department of Innovation and Governenace at TTÜ says: "Estonia and Finland are very close to each other in all possible senses of being 'close', including cultural, social, and intellectual closeness. (The only difference is that Estonians are a little smarter, and their sauna hotter). And adds that we can join each other to celebrate our centennials. “Our countries have developed into strong northern societies that value freedom, education, science and rational thinking above all other values.”
Finland gained its independence on December 6, 1917. It took place after the Bolshevik coup in Russia, when the Parliament of the Grand Duchy of Finland, then part of the Russian Empire, decided at first on November 15 to recognize itself as the supreme authority in Finland, and then declared Finland as an independent state on December 6, 1917.
Congratulations to the Republic of Finland on their 100th anniversary!
