Estonia's first 5G network will be set up at TalTech
In cooperation with Telia, Ericsson and TalTech University, the first 5G pilot network in Estonia will be opened at the end of the year at TalTec campus, where companies and start-ups are expected to come and develop future services and test new business models.
"In 2016, in cooperation with Ericsson, we announced the intention to establish the first 5G network of Stockholm and Tallinn for the Centenary year of the Republic of Estonia. Now is the time to keep that promise," said Kirke Saar, Technology Director at Telia Estonia.
According to Saar, the network will cover the entire TalTech campus with an ultra-fast mobile data link, enabling the development of completely new services and solutions.
"The aim is to create a vision with a 5G network of how it would improve our life and how a city of the future would operate by using the top technology with everything that goes with it. We want to show how different vehicles travel and interact with each other, what are the effects of the smart buildings on everyday life, and how would traffic look like with self-driving cars, smart traffic signs and (traffic) infrastructure with different sensors. We believe that new technology makes our lives safer, more comfortable and more efficient; both at home and in the city," explained Saar.
According to Per Narvinger, head of the Customer Relations Unit of North and Central Europe in Ericsson, the construction of the 5G pilot network in TalTech shows Ericsson's commitment to managing innovation and digitalisation with its partner Telia in Estonia. "At the same time, this 5G project in Estonia marks a significant step towards the launch of the first 5G commercially-used services."
TalTech has built an autonomously driving car (Iseauto), which will be one of the first collaborative projects that will be developed together by 5G Test Network. The next step in this cooperation is to show in 2019 how the Iseauto operates in traffic and communicates with the surrounding infrastructure by 5G technology.
"One of the aims of the cooperation program is to launch the 5G network at TalTech campus and create an environment where companies and start-ups can develop and test new products and services together with the university," said Gert Jervan, dean of TalTech School of Information Technologies. "With the help of a smart campus test platform, entrepreneurs will be able to develop new business models with the help of researchers, which would work in the new and most sophisticated 5G network. All interested businesses are expected here to develop their new products, services and business models to benefit from opportunities that 5G technology offers and together take the digital living environment forward," said Jervan.
